German children’s television is not a bad choice for acquiring knowledge about a wide variety of subjects.
And this also applies to Braille.
Our find of the day from the vastness of the internet is the children’s report Checker Tobi, part of Checker Welten.
In the episode “Der Blindencheck” (The Blind Check), last broadcast on May 26, 2024, he deals with blindness, and of course Braille is also included. We at braille200 think that, considering that only a relatively short part of the documentary deals with Braille, the topic was very well presented.

Summary

In this episode, Checker Tobi accompanies people who are blind or visually impaired and experiences how they cope with everyday life. He learns in a particularly impressive way from Bettina and Lok, who are blind, how important order, orientation techniques, and aids are. Of course, Braille is also an important part of this. Bettina shows him a Braille display that converts text on a computer into tactile dots, as well as books in Braille. He learns that Braille consists of six tactile dots, which can be combined to represent every letter and character. Louis Braille invented this system, which enables blind people around the world to read and write.
Euro coins with a ridged edge and talking devices also make everyday life easier. Tobi also tries out the white cane and experiences how blind people orient themselves with the help of floor markings, sounds, and tactile signals.
At the end, the Checker himself receives a small message in Braille.

Um sich Wissen über die verschiedensten Sachgebiete anzueignen, ist das deutsche Kinderfernsehen gar keine schlechte Wahl.
Und tatsächlich gilt das auch für Braille.
Unser heutiges Fundstück aus dem großen weiten des Internets ist die Kinderreportage Checker Tobi, ein Teil der Checker Welten.
In der Episode “Der Blindencheck, zuletzt ausgestrahlt am 26.05.2024 beschäftigt er sich mit Blindheit, und da darf natürlich auch die Brailleschrift nicht fehlen. Wir von braille200 finden, dafür, dass sich nur ein verhältnismäßig kurzer Teil der Reportage mit Braille beschäftigt, wurde das Thema sehr gut aufbereitet.

Zusammenfassung

In der Folge begleitet Checker Tobi Menschen, die blind oder sehbehindert sind, und erlebt, wie sie ihren Alltag meistern. Besonders eindrücklich lernt er von Bettina und Lok, die blind sind, wie wichtig Ordnung, Orientierungstechniken und Hilfsmittel sind. Natürlich darf dabei die Brailleschrift nicht fehlen.
Bettina zeigt ihm eine Braillezeile, die am Computer Texte in tastbare Punkte überträgt, sowie Bücher in Punktschrift. Er erfährt, dass Braille aus sechs ertastbaren Punkten besteht, mit deren Kombination jeder Buchstabe und jedes Zeichen dargestellt wird. Louis Braille hat dieses System erfunden und es ermöglicht Blinden weltweit zu lesen und zu schreiben. Auch Euro-Münzen mit geriffeltem Rand oder sprechende Geräte erleichtern den Alltag. Tobi probiert zudem den weißen Stock aus und erlebt, wie Blinde sich mithilfe von Bodenmarkierungen, Geräuschen und taktilen Signalen orientieren.
Am Ende bekommt der Checker selbst noch mal eine kleine Botschaft in Braille in die Hand.
