In Image, Sound and Text: Shanice Human

At the Tactile Reading & Graphics Conference in Amsterdam, our team recorded a series of short interviews and statements from people around the world who are involved with Braille. Whether in daily life, education, or through community engagement.
Today, we’d like to share one of those conversations with you.
Even though it’s brief, it offers some fascinating insights into distant societies and their relationship with Braille.
You’ll find the interview right here in smoothed written form. And of course, the video version is available on our channel on YouTube.

Be confident using braille! Shanice Human’s testimonial to Braille 200

Interviewer: Hello.
Shanice: Hi.
Interviewer: What’s your name and where are you from?
Shanice: My name is Shanice Human, and I’m from South Africa.
Interviewer: South Africa? That’s quite far!
Shanice: Yes, very far! All the way down south, in Port Elizabeth.
Interviewer: Since we’re celebrating 200 years of Braille, can you tell us what your favorite Braille use case is?
Shanice: For me, my favorite thing about Braille is teaching it to children.
I use different games and activities to help them learn how to read and write in Braille. That’s what I enjoy the most.
Interviewer: That’s wonderful! Do you have a message or a wish for Braille users?
Shanice: I really wish for them to feel more confident and comfortable using Braille.
Many children in South Africa feel a bit shy about using it, even though it’s such an important part of their lives.
So I’d love for them to feel empowered. To proudly ask, “Where’s my Braille book?” and use Braille at school and at home.
Interviewer: Thank you so much.
Shanice: Thank you.
