Today, we are pleased to present a small but fine contribution: a heartfelt homage to Braille, penned by Christa Groth from Germany. In the form of a poem, she expresses her appreciation for this ingenious writing system.

An Ode to Braille
If blind folks seek a lofty aim
And strive to make their mark and name,
Then reading must become their guide—
In books, true joy and strength reside.
So it’s both wise and truly sound,
In daily life and all around,
To master skills with open mind
And thirst for knowledge of all kind.
Louis Braille, a pioneer bright,
Gave blind people the gift of sight—
Not through their eyes, but through their touch,
A gift that truly means so much.
He broke down barriers, paved the way—
For that, we thank him still today.
Now we can write, now we can read—
His system meets a vital need.
And even in this modern age,
Where tech and tools are all the rage,
We use the Braille script every day
To learn, to live, to work, to play.
For music, science, math as well,
There’s Braille to help us learn and spell.
And even shorthand we pursue—
We keep up with the seeing too!
In daily life and in careers,
Braille brings us joy across the years.
Much we’ve achieved, and made come true—
Thanks to this script, and all we do.
Though signs may differ here and there,
Its power is felt everywhere.
So let us guard it, bold and strong—
This gift of Braille must live on long.
Ein Lob auf die Punktschrift
Wenn Blinde wollen in ihrem Leben
Sich ein hohes Ziel erstreben
So müssen sie belesen sein
Und an Büchern sich erfreu’n
Darum ist es gut und richtig
Und im Alltag immer wichtig
Dass wir unser Leben meistern
Und für Bildung uns begeistern
Louis Braille als Wegbereiter
Schuf eine Schrift für blinde Leute
Die Überwindung vieler Schranken
Das haben wir ihm zu verdanken
Da wir nun können lesen, schreiben
Wird Braille für uns ein Meister bleiben
Auch in der technisierten Zeit
Gebrauchen wir die Punktschrift heut.
Für noten, Chemie und Mathematik
in Punktschrift es auch Zeichen gibt
Wir können selbst beim Stenographieren
Noch mit den Sehenden konkurrieren
Im Alltag und Beruf zugleich
Punktschrift macht unser Leben reicht
Dass manche Leistung wir vollbracht
Möglich hat’s diese Schrift gemacht
Auch international ist sie
Trotz mancher Zeichen Unterschied
Die Punktschrift ist ein wahrer Segen
