To conclude our reading event, we have a poem written by the reader herself that is perfect for this time of year!
The year is coming to an end, today is the first Sunday of Advent, Christmas is approaching, and what is an absolute must?
Cookies, of course!
Regina Vollbrecht presents her poem in Braille and with matching decorations, a tin full of homemade cookies and a small jar of tonka beans.
You can find an English translation right here and, as always,
the original in German on the Livingbraille YouTube channel.
Braille 200 wishes you all, and especially Regina, a wonderful pre-Christmas season with all the treats you can imagine!
Scent of Cookies
Written by: Regina Vollbrecht
Before I get to breathe it in,
there’s cheerful work to begin.
A list of ingredients must be made,
with plenty on parade.
Sugar, butter, eggs for a start—
and M-things play their part:
marzipan, flour, poppy seed, marmalade,
yes, even chocolate makes the grade.
Spices like cloves and cinnamon
set my thoughts softly wandering.
Yet special notes rise and swoon
from the rare tonka bean’s tune.
Stir everything, knead it into dough,
then on to the next steps we go.
Sometimes it rests in the cold awhile,
before it’s rolled out in style.
Hearts and stars appear in the light—
those shapes bring me most delight.
Through the grinder twisted and spun,
spritz cookies are begun.
Pressed through the cookie press,
egg-nog biscuits find success.
Kipferl and little spheres take form—
there’s no fixed rule or norm.
A hollow filled with jam so bright,
marzipan wrapped in dough just right.
A dollop on wafers or a baking sheet—
that’s how coconut macaroons come to life, warm and sweet.
Once the cookies bake in the oven’s glow,
time slows, and scents begin to flow.
Whether it’s vanilla, gingerbread, or cinnamon’s art,
I must taste every cookie—each one plays its part.
But first they’re dressed with care—
a drizzle of chocolate here,
a tumble through powdered sugar there,
before they melt away like air.
Even when the fragrance doesn’t linger long above,
next year it greets me again—this scent I love.
