Today, Thorsten Schweinhardt is not only giving us a sample from a children’s book, but also a little insight into his personal relationship with it.
Thank you, Thorsten, for sending us into this Saturday in such a warm and atmospheric way.
Short summary
The book is a children’s novel, a rather quirky tale. I’d say it has something of the charm of The Wind in the Willows and is just as fantastical as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, with a similar kind of humor.
Among other things, there’s a tuning fork that can change the weather, and the story is full of unusual characters. The main character is a boy named Toby. His best friend is a clever, talking chameleon called Beinah Unsichtbar (“Almost invisible”). There’s also a composer who, if I recall correctly, goes by the name W. Itzbold (“J. Okester”).
In general, the book is populated by a whole assortment of talking animals: a crocodile, a camel, and an abundance of herrings. In one episode set on the ocean floor—where Toby has somehow ended up—we now dive into the story together.
