Since 2004, we in Germany have been celebrating the wonderful tradition and importance of reading aloud on the third Friday in November.
The nationwide Reading Aloud Day, which is now even celebrated beyond Germany’s borders, was launched by the Reading Foundation, the ZEIT magazine, and the Deutsche Bahn Foundation.
Next Friday, it will be that time again.
Many libraries, schools, bookstores, and daycare centers will be hosting special reading events on this day.
And maybe Braille 200 will too?
After all, we’ve all been able to read aloud for 200 years!
This weekend, we would like to present two of these events where Braille will be read aloud.
We’ll start today with “Lesen um den heißen Braille” (Reading Around the Hot Braille),
the reading competition organized by the Bavarian Audio Library Association and the Bavarian Association of the blind and the partially sighted.
Also included: a fantastic compilation from the preliminary round for you to listen to.

Reading for the Braille (No Beating Around the Braille)
The reading competition organized by the Bavarian Audio Library (Bayerische Hörbücherei e.V.) and the BBSB e.V.
This year, we are celebrating 200 years of Braille. What a great invention! That’s why the Bavarian Audio Library and the BBSB have challenged Braille readers in Bavaria to take part in a reading competition. Who has what it takes to be the reading champion?
The preliminary round took place on Halloween in the audio library’s premises and was not scary at all, but wonderful: great candidates, great atmosphere, great stories. The finest dexterity was on display.

And now the countdown to the final is on! It will take place on National Reading Day, Friday, November 21, 2025, from 3:00 p.m. to approximately 5:30 p.m. Where: Kultur im Trafo, Nymphenburger Str. 171a, 80634 Munich (easily accessible, near the Rotkreuzplatz subway station).
The final is being held under the patronage of two personalities who know how to tell stories: Werner Reuß, head of the “Knowledge and Education” program division at Bayerischer Rundfunk, and Jutta Kammann – known to many as an actress. She has been associated with the audio library for some time, as she has recorded her exciting autobiography “Rothaarig und wild entschlossen! Aufgeben gibt’s nicht” (Red-haired and fiercely determined! Giving up is not an option) as an audiobook for the users of the special library.
The competition will be similar to the preliminary round: First, the freestyle: The candidates will present their favorite texts of their own choice (they have 4 minutes to captivate us!). Then the compulsory part: The tricky part! The candidates have to read “prima vista” – texts that they are only given on the spot. You could say: a reading adventure without a safety net! After the jury has retired to deliberate, the winners will be announced. The main prize? A relaxing weekend at the Aura Hotel Bad Saulgrub – perfect for reading in peace and quiet!

Vorlesetag 2025
Seit 2004 feiern wir in Deutschland an jedem dritten Freitag im November die schöne Tradition und Bedeutung des Vorlesens.
Ins Leben gerufen wurde der bundesweite Vorlesetag, der mittlerweile sogar über die Grenzen Deutschlands hinaus gefeiert wird, von der Stiftung Lesen, der ZEIT und der Deutschen Bahn Stiftung.
Nächsten Freitag ist es wieder so weit.
In vielen Bibliotheken, Schulen, Buchhandlungen und Kindertagesstätten gibt es an diesem Tag besondere Vorleseaktionen.
Und vielleicht ja auch bei Braille 200?
Denn vorlesen können wir alle ja schließlich schon seit 200 Jahren!
Dieses Wochenende wollen wir euch aber erst einmal zwei dieser Veranstaltungen präsentieren, bei denen in Braille vorgelesen wird.
Den Anfang macht heute „Lesen um den heißen Braille“,
der Vorlesewettbewerb der Bayerischen Hörbücherei e.V. und des BBSB e.V.

Lesen um den heißen Braille
Der Vorlesewettbewerb der Bayerischen Hörbücherei e.V. und des BBSB e.V.
Wir feiern in diesem Jahr 200 Jahre Brailleschrift. Eine großartige Erfindung! Deshalb haben die Bayerische Hörbücherei e. V. und der BBSB e. V. die Brailleschrift-Leser in Bayern zum Vorlesewettbewerb herausgefordert. Wer hat das Zeug zum Lese-Champion?
Der Vorentscheid fand an Halloween in den Räumen der Hörbücherei statt und war gar nicht schaurig, sondern schön: Tolle Kandidaten, tolle Stimmung, tolle Geschichten. Fingerfertigkeiten vom Feinsten waren geboten. :

Und nun läuft der Countdown zum Finale! Dieses steigt am bundesweiten Vorlesetag, Freitag, den 21. November 2025, um 15:00 Uhr bis voraussichtlich 17:30 Uhr. Wo: Kultur im Trafo, Nymphenburger Str. 171a, 80634 München (gut erreichbar, Nähe U-Bahn Rotkreuzplatz).
Das Finale steht unter der Schirmherrschaft von zwei Persönlichkeiten, die wissen, wie man Geschichten erzählt: Werner Reuß, Leiter des Programmbereichs “Wissen und Bildung” beim Bayerischen Rundfunk sowie Jutta Kammann – vielen bekannt als Schauspielerin. Sie ist der Hörbücherei schon länger verbunden, denn sie hat ihre spannende Autobiografie „Rothaarig und wild entschlossen! Aufgeben gibt’s nicht“ für die Nutzer der Spezialbibliothek selbst als Audiobuch eingesprochen.
So läuft der Wettbewerb ähnlich wie schon im Vorentscheid ab: Zunächst die Kür: Die Kandidaten präsentieren ihre selbst ausgewählten Lieblingstexte (4 Minuten Zeit, um uns mitzureißen!). Dann die Pflicht: Der knifflige Teil! Die Kandidaten müssen “prima vista” lesen – Texte, die sie erst vor Ort ausgehändigt bekommen. Man könnte sagen: Lese-Abenteuer ohne Netz und doppelten Boden! Nachdem die Jury sich zur Beratung zurückgezogen hat, werden die Sieger gekürt. Der Hauptgewinn? Ein entspanntes Wochenende im Aura Hotel Bad Saulgrub – perfekt, um dort mal wieder in Ruhe zu lesen!
